Alumina fiber is a polycrystalline inorganic fiber composed primarily of aluminum oxide, typically containing silicon dioxide as an additive to stabilize the crystalline phase. Based on their physical form, these fibers are classified into short fibers, continuous fibers, and whiskers.
These fibers exhibit high strength, excellent heat resistance, and resistance to chemical corrosion, with a long-term service temperature range of 1300–1400°C. They possess low thermal conductivity, low thermal shrinkage, and low heat capacity, and are suitable for use in acidic environments, oxidizing or reducing atmospheres, and vacuum conditions. They are primarily used for thermal insulation linings in high-temperature industrial furnaces, as catalyst supports, and as reinforcements for composite materials. The primary method of production is the sol-gel process.
