Alumina fiber is a polycrystalline inorganic fiber composed primarily of aluminum oxide. It is mainly used for furnace linings in various applications-such as heat treatment furnaces, cracking furnaces, and incinerators-and serves as a catalyst carrier and thermal insulation material for nuclear reactors and space shuttles.
It has a long-term service temperature of 1300–1400°C and exhibits good chemical stability, allowing for use in acidic environments, oxidizing or reducing atmospheres, and vacuum conditions; however, it is susceptible to corrosion by lead vapor and vanadium pentoxide. According to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), alumina fiber is not classified as a hazardous chemical.
